Introduction
Effective from 1st June 2025
These Terms and Conditions are between you and Life Insurance Association Ireland CLG (trading as LIA) and are governed by our Constitution. By entering into a ‘business relationship’ with LIA (e.g. setting up an account on our website or registering for services), you agree to be legally bound by these Terms and Conditions. Please read them carefully and only proceed if you are fully satisfied with their content.
For the purposes of these Terms and Conditions:
- Business Relationship refers to any form of engagement with LIA’s services, including membership, course enrolment, or designation maintenance.
- Member refers to an individual with current, active LIA membership.
- Designation includes titles such as QFA, QFA FLIA, APA, CUA, CUG, CUC, RPA, PTP, SIA, FPRA.
- CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development.
- LIA Register of Accredited Members refers to LIA’s official public listing of compliant members and designation holders.
If you hold or are applying for any LIA designation(s), or are a Grandfathered individual as recognised by the Central Bank of Ireland, you agree to:
- Participate fully in the applicable CPD scheme.
- Remain compliant with CPD requirements at all times.
- Maintain active membership of LIA.
Failure to comply may result in the removal of your designation(s) and/or membership. You are responsible for informing your employer in such cases, though LIA may also notify them to assist with Minimum Competency Code compliance.
Any certificates issued remain the property of LIA and must be returned if your membership lapses or CPD compliance is not maintained.
LIA may contact you via the postal and/or email address you provide. If you provide an email address, you consent to electronic communication. It is your responsibility to ensure your contact details are current. Updates can be submitted by email (queries@lia.ie), phone, or via the 'Update your profile' button in the members area of our website.
LIA processes your data in line with our Data Protection Policy and Website Privacy Policy. We will only ever share the minimum amount of data necessary for the purposes of the processing being carried out by a third party, and we have strict processing agreements in place with any third party with whom your data is shared, to ensure the security and confidentiality of your information. Your data will only ever be shared in a secured format e.g. via VPN, secure cloud, encryption etc. We ensure that we have appropriate contracts in place to secure your personal data when sharing same.
We will only share your personal data:
- When legally required.
- To fulfil our contractual obligations.
- Under a legitimate interest with appropriate security measures.
Examples of third parties we may share your data with include:
- Course partners (e.g. ATU, Insurance Institute of Ireland).
- Your employer (for compliance with Central Bank regulations).
- The Central Bank (on request, for regulatory compliance).
- FPSB Ireland (if enrolled on the final module of the Postgraduate Diploma in Business in Financial Planning).
- Other partners (e.g. postage providers, IT/cloud providers) under strict processing agreements.
Data transfers outside the EU/EEA are limited and subject to Standard Contractual Clauses (e.g. online exam invigilation involving US-based partners).
When LIA is notified that you’ve left your employer, we will email you and, if no update is received within 14 days, we will delete the employer details from your profile to comply with GDPR.
By using our website (www.lia.ie), you acknowledge the risks of internet use and agree:
- That any instructions received via your login credentials are deemed to originate from you.
- To keep login details secure and confidential.
- That LIA accepts no liability for viruses or content on third-party websites linked from ours.
LIA is not responsible for inaccuracies in external training resources and does not endorse third-party materials.
All content, materials, and resources provided by LIA are the intellectual property of LIA or our partners. These are provided solely for your personal educational use and may not be reproduced, distributed, or commercially used without written consent.
By engaging with LIA’s services, you agree not to:
- Misuse learning resources or assessments (e.g. plagiarism, exam misconduct).
- Engage in offensive or disruptive behaviour on any LIA platform.
Violation may result in termination of your business relationship with LIA.
- All fees (e.g. for modules, membership, events) are non-refundable and non-transferable.
- If an exam candidate does not pass after four exam registrations (including failures and no-shows), the fifth registration onwards will be charged at the full rate (not re-registration rate).
- Deferrals require submission of a deferral form and supporting documentation. A re-registration fee may apply.
- For withdrawals from the Postgraduate Diploma:
- Before 3 weeks from the official registration close: 100% refund.
- After 3 weeks: No refund.
If you wish to make a complaint, please complete the online form via our Complaints Policy & Procedures or email queries@lia.ie. Complaints will be addressed promptly in accordance with our published policy.
Either party may terminate the business relationship in writing, including via email or phone. Termination does not entitle you to a refund of fees. Upon termination, access to learning materials and records may be withdrawn. Certain obligations (e.g. fee payments or data retention responsibilities) may survive termination.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, LIA shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of our services. This includes loss of data, business interruption, or any content inaccuracies.
LIA shall not be held liable for delays or failure to perform where such delay or failure is due to causes beyond its reasonable control, including natural disasters, pandemics, system failures, cyberattacks, or government restrictions.
LIA may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time. The most current version will always be available on our website, and you are advised to review it periodically.
These Terms and Conditions are governed by Irish law. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Ireland.
