Summary
The Certificate in Credit Union Operations is a purpose-built programme designed by LIA to meet the needs of professionals within the Credit Union Movement. This flexible, online programme provides the opportunity to earn up to four professional Credit Union designations, tailored to align with your role.
This programme satisfies all of the Central Bank of Ireland’s Minimum Competency Code (MCC) requirements for Credit Unions and also meets the MCC requirements for advising and selling in Lending, Mortgages, and Term Deposits.
Upon successful completion, participants may qualify for the following designations, based on the modules completed:

To obtain this qualification participants must complete QFA Regulation, Credit Union Practices plus 1 additional module (either QFA Loans or Credit Union Governance & Risk)

Designed for those looking to start or advance their careers in the Credit Union movement. This programme equips you with professional designations that meet the Central Bank's Minimum Competency Code (MCC) requirements. It’s particularly suited for those in support, adviser, compliance, or governance roles, providing essential knowledge to navigate the operational and regulatory landscape of Credit Unions.
Delivery and Assessment
All modules are delivered online through distance and self-directed learning, allowing you to study at your own pace from home or work. You will receive a textbook and access to a range of learning resources to support their studies.
Each module is worth 5 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), and all exams are 2-hour multiple-choice exams consisting of 100 questions.

Award and Designation
Upon successful completion, participants are awarded the Level 7 Certificate in Credit Union Operations qualification from Atlantic Technological University (ATU) and may earn professional designations from LIA based on the modules completed.

Completing Credit Union Governance & Risk earns the Credit Union Governance and Risk (CUGR) designation.

Completing Credit Union Practices and QFA Regulation earns the Credit Union Adviser (CUA) designation.

Completing QFA Regulation and QFA Loans earns the Accredited Product Adviser (APA) Loans designation.
CPD
8 Hours Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is awarded on successful completion of each module.
Progression

Topics covered include the structure of credit unions, roles of the board of directors, committees, and the manager, and essential elements of a compliance programme, including fitness and probity standards. Participants will also explore core and additional services, strategies for money laundering and terrorist financing prevention, and best practices in risk management and systems. Upon registration, you will receive a textbook for the module(s) you are studying. An equivalent qualification at the same level (e.g. A levels; Highers/Advanced Highers (Scotland), International Baccalaureate; European Baccalaureate etc).
Any QQI level 5/6 FE qualification is acceptable.
All applicants are required to have competency in English endorsed by the Irish Leaving Certificate or other equivalent award.
All learners are required to be proficient in English. Where a candidate’s mother tongue is not English, he or she is required to provide a proof of proficiency in the English language through satisfactory performance on an internationally recognised test (e.g. IELTS 5.5) or other similar English Language qualifications.
Mature applicants who do not have a Leaving Certificate will be assessed for entry based on work experience along with a demonstrated commitment towards the academic requirements for the programme. This may be assessed using a written application from the candidate and/or by interview. Such learners will have relevant employment and will have access to the IT facilities necessary to participate in the programme. RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) applicants will be required to complete a personal statement which addresses how the applicant has met the minimum standard by reference to QQI’s Business Standards at Level 6.
All other applicants, who do not meet these criteria, will be dealt with on their individual merits and on a case-by-case basis. Decisions made under this mechanism will not set a precedent for adjudicating similar applications.
