With a growing demand in the finance industry for professional Pension and Retirement Planning advice the need for specialist Retirement Planning Advisers is greater than ever.  

This one-module Micro Credential Level 9 course is essential learning for anyone involved in advising clients on pension products and retirement planning. Over the course of the module you will examine the process of using projections to determine a client’s retirement income shortfall, the contribution required to meet that shortfall and the different options which may be open to clients when taking retirement benefits from private pension arrangements.

This course will provide students with specialist knowledge and the ability to: 

  • Evaluate the steps involved in making a personal recommendation to a client in relation to his or her retirement funding needs.   

  • Explain the client's entitlements, rates of payment and the taxation of the State Pension (Contributory) and the State Pension (Non-Contributory)   

  • Appraise and compare the different pension products including retirement provision options for sole traders, partnerships, proprietary directors and employees.   

  • Compare different methods of providing death and disability cover in conjunction with retirement funding arrangements.   

  • Assess the main investment asset classes and explain optimisation of returns, the potential benefits of rebalancing and the various default strategies employed under various retirement funding arrangements.

This course is for: 

The Retirement Planning Adviser (RPA) designation is a progression route for those who hold the QFA designation and is designed for anyone who wants to take their Pension and Retirement Planning knowledge to the next level, beyond minimum competency requirements. 

Delivery and Assessment 

This part-time online course consists of a single module, delivered one evening per week over a 12-week period. 

Assessment is conducted on a continuous basis through three components: the first and second exams each contribute 25% to the final grade, while the final exam accounts for the remaining 50%.

Award and Designation 

Upon completion, participants receive a Certificate from ATU Sligo and will be awarded the Retirement Planning Adviser (RPA) designation by LIA. 

*Students must hold an active QFA designation to hold the RPA designation.   

CPD 

8 Hours Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is awarded on successful completion of this course.   

Progression 

Those that successfully complete this course will receive a module credit against the Retirement Planning module on the prestigious Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning - LIA's gateway to achieving the internationally recognised financial planning designation, Certified Financial Planner™ professional.

This module provides a comprehensive overview of retirement planning, equipping professionals with the knowledge to navigate key aspects of pensions and retirement benefits. Topics include state pension entitlements, considerations for sole traders, partners, proprietary directors, and employees, as well as charges, transfers, and leaving service implications. Participants will explore pension adjustment orders, retirement benefit options, and strategies for managing income in retirement. 

The module also covers factfinding techniques, quantifying retirement income needs, investment planning, risk benefits, and succession and estate planning. It concludes with insights on pension limits and the process of making tailored personal recommendations for clients.

Entry Requirments 

Relevant 2.2 honours degree (level 8) in business, finance or in a numerate discipline (such as mathematics, physics or engineering)

Equivalent relevant professional qualification:

Qualified Financial Adviser (QFA) with three years’ relevant work experience obtained in the life assurance or financial services industry.

In order to obtain the RPA designation students must hold an active QFA designation and LIA membership.
