September 2009 saw the first students of LIA’s exciting new qualification, the Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning, embark on their studies. The programme was developed by LIA in association with the Institute of Bankers in Ireland and the Irish Taxation Institute and is offered through the Institute of Bankers in Ireland’s School of Professional Finance, a recognised school of UCD.
One hundred and seventy students enrolled in the initial programme. Students came from a number of backgrounds: brokers, independent advisers, tied agents, life assurance companies, accountants, private banking, bancassurance and tax advisors. Feedback has been extremely positive and the practical nature of the programme has yielded immediate tangible benefits to the students participating.
An excellent qualification in its own right, we are particularly pleased that it has been approved by Financial Planning Standards Board Ireland (FPSB Ireland) as meeting the educational requirement for the prestigious CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification, which is being introduced to Ireland for the first time.

Each module is delivered by way of twelve 2½ hour lectures / workshops. Dublin lectures are held on two evenings per week while lectures outside Dublin may be offered at weekends for convenience. Subject to operational constraints and academic requirements, students may opt to take either one or two modules each semester. Students commencing in September 2010 (and taking two modules per semester) may, therefore, expect to complete the Diploma in January 2012. Successful students who wish to proceed to CFP certification will then have to meet the requirements laid down by FPSB Ireland, which include a final certification examination.
